St. Mary’s – a Family Church

Children and young people are welcomed at St.Mary’s Church and there are family services on the second Sunday of each month at 10 o’clock.  These services are specifically aimed at children and a great way of meeting other young families in the parish.  There is a toy box for little ones to explore and plenty of drinks and snacks – just in case!

Throughout the year St.Mary’s holds a number of special services and events specifically aimed at families.  Mothering Sunday is one of the highlights of the spring calendar, together with ‘Daffodil Sunday.’  St.Mary’s is renowned for the fantastic array of narcissi which carpet the churchyard usually by the middle of March.  This beautiful display is celebrated by a special service, together with a puppet or magic show for children in the afternoon and teas at the village hall.  Easter, Harvest and, of course, Christmas (including a candlelit children’s carol service) are other key events where families not only from the parish, but from miles around come to St.Mary’s to celebrate.

There are several ‘family church’ gatherings held throughout the year on Saturdays at Pyrton village hall.  These are usually linked to the key events in the church calendar and are a chance for the children to listen to bible stories and participate in some fun and creative activities.   Last year, the children made pancakes at the beginning of Lent, miniature gardens at Easter and painted a beautiful mural at harvest time which now hangs in Pyrton Village Hall.
